Open Data for All

Role: Creative Direction, Designer

Each year, the City of New York releases the annual Open Data for All report. NYC Open Data for All is a New York City initiative to engage New Yorkers in the information that is produced and used by City government. The Mayor's Office of Data Analytics (MODA) and the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) partner to form the Open Data team. These entities, along with the New York City Council, advocates, and the civic tech community, work together to achieve Open Data for All.

This year, I had the opportunity to work with the MODA team to design the 2020 progress report. The challenge we faced was to visually illustrate the ways in which New Yorkers can engage with the City's data. After some conversation, I pitched a concept in which New Yorkers are building a giant puzzle of New York City. Within each of the puzzle pieces are illustrated scenes representing the various data sets that are covered in the report.
